A rant about something

Oh yeah, and did you hear, Google solved Airborne Wind Energy? They are “really smart people”!
I heard Microsoft was supposedly at the top, when it comes to Artificial “Intelligence”.
Their search engine is called “Bing”. It has an AI option.
I first asked Bing about the average annual precipitation (rainfall in inches, including snowfall meltwater) for Hesperia. California.
Bing spat back four (4) “results”, ranging from about 2 inches to 20 inches.
The one that appeared correct to me was about 6 inches, from Wikipedia.
I could figure that out, because I have an actual brain, that sometimes even functions correctly!
So, disappointed with the results of a regular “Bing” search, I next tried the “AI” search.
The AI search merely returned the same 4 results as the regular search, listed one over the other, not even acknowledging that the results did not agree, or anything else. In other words, the supposed “AI” was unable to figure out anything relevant to my question except refer to 75% wrong info from a simple web search.

Another day I asked Bing “AI” about a rule for Medicare.
It gave me back the typical wrong answer one often finds on the web, which was close to the right answer, but misstated, and wrong in its detail.
So I asked Bing AI if maybe the actual answer (which I knew) was the real answer.
It then came back affirming that indeed, the answer I had given it was the correct answer.
I then expressed my skepticism over AI in general and asked Bing AI why it had given me a wrong answer.
It started apologizing and making excuses, saying it was only a “language-based” something-or-other.

They’ve been shutting down self-driving taxis in San Francisco - they were causing too many accidents and traffic jams.

Imagine how a Tesla on self-driving would react to a trash bag blowing across the street. It would probably “decide” it was a kid running across the street, slam on the brakes, and cause a 20-car pileup accident, killing a dozen people!

And how about when you call any company and they make you talk to a robot voice that says to just use regular language to tell it what your issue is. And it can never understand anything you say and you have to spend 20 minutes to get to the right person?

Even the stupid “spell-check” on this website, and others, often can’t even guess what word you mean even if you only screwed up one letter!
And when it does, and you click on the correct result, the AI often doesn’t actually manage to change your word, and you still have to do it manually.

The only good experience I’ve had with AI that I can remember is going thru the Del Taco drive-thru, where a robot voice was able to take my order and get it right. It seemed amazing - not that it could be done, but that a single example actually worked in real life. That’s after what, 40 years of “machine learning”, “AI”, whatever new buzzword you want to use?

Let’s see, wasn’t AI going to solve AWE? What? It has nothing to say about AWE? Why, because it is totally stupid like everyone else? Because all it can do is google something like everyone else? I would not keep getting so caught up in the latest AI hype cycle. Think “3-D Printing”. All the 3-D printing companies have merged and the result is a company that is still losing money, and a stock (DDD) that keeps going down.
