At Kiteswarms, we are developing the future of wind energy. We are building vertically ascending kites that are interlinked and rise together to a great height with consistent wind conditions. This allows us to constantly harvest wind energy in abundance, compared to conventional wind turbines. We develop a disruptive technology in the energy market, to make our global energy needs green, safe and available for everyone.

This animation shows Kiteswarms’ fundamental concept for harvesting the power of high-altitude winds. Several autonomously controlled kites are tethered to a ground-based generator. The kites fly specifically designed periodic trajectories that consist of two phases: a reel-out and a reel-in phase.

During reel-out the strong aerodynamic forces on the kites are transmitted through the tensioned tether. The tether unwinds from a drum, driving the generator.

To restore the system to its initial configuration, the drum rolls up the tether during the reel-in phase. Due to a much lower tether tension, reel-in expends less electricity than generated during reel-out. The result is a substantial net gain of electrical power.

The kites’ trajectories as shown in the video are computed using optimal control algorithms and models of the real system.

It began with AWE

Kiteswarms begun thanks to Reinhart Paelinck’s passion for developing cutting-edge kites and airborne wind energy. In 2017, Reinhart got in touch with Prof. Dr. Moritz Diehl, an expert of Airborne Wind Energy (AWE), to explore the possibility of a dedicated research project at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and find out if the idea of harvesting high-altitude wind energy with swarms of tethered drones is cost-efficient and feasible, not just from a research perspective but also as a product.

Off-the-shelf components were either prohibitively expensive for a start-up, or performance was too constrained to achieve a functioning prototype, so the first team members of Kiteswarms decided to build the technological backbone from scratch. This has proved to be extremely valuable.

What’s a Multi-Drone-Tethered System?

A MultiDrone-Tethered System consists of:

  • Drone - or group of drones at the end of a tether that performs a specific task, the End-Effector.
  • Tether that may be held up by more drones, that provides power and/or substances to the End-Effector Drone.
  • Ground Power Station that provides and converts power, allows communication between the drone and the Ground Control Station.

Due to the reliability of tethered connections, tethered drones are currently mostly used for aerial observation and telecommunication. Yet, you can operate them remotely and perform different specific tasks in various applications and all kinds of terrain, even the most unaccessible.

Untethered Drones vs. Tethered Drones

For commercial purposes, untethered drones present substantial limitations to your projects and business. As time is precious, any time recharging or swapping batteries in the field is inefficient.

The concept of group of kites seems to be evolving into a group of drones.
