KiteLab’s low-tech wind-shear detection method is to sight along the kiteline of an upwind kite. Any windshear will be evident as a deviation in direction from the undisturbed state. Let LIDAR and SODAR further mature and become cheap for this simple method to become obsolete.
Small scale breaking gravity waves can appear suddenly in the wind-field, creating peak shear transients, so upwind wind-shear detection is not a perfect data-source.
