Questions about Moderation

If only this comment had any valid criticism of the research in question.

These, and comments like these, go against the forum rules or the spirit of them, so I’m going to give you a one month silence period to remind you of the existence of them.

@AweEnthusiast
John, you just approved Windy’s intention to silence Doug on the forum for a month with a like.

You must understand that by doing so, you lose all credit for challenging Windy’s past, present and future decisions, including those to silence Dave Santos.

You missed the point here, PierreB.

I am for discipline and love.

You are witness that I had my reservations about Doug’s various offtopic, diversionary and sometimes even rude comments under my posts most of which had been overlooked by the forum administrators hitherto.

I had even raised Doug’s matter between us off forum privately but both your good self and DaveS persuaded me to continue to bear with him.

I liked this long overdue action of the forum administrators which hopefully will mark the end of hitherto unfair preferential treatment on the forum.

Thank you.

JohnO

@AweEnthusiast John, I seem to remember that it was the movement of your topics that was more of a problem than Doug’s comments.

Since you believe that one person, in this case Doug, should be silenced for not following certain rules according to the administration, you must implicitly admit the same for another person, in this case Dave.

So there is a contradiction in your attitude: you approve of an action to silence Doug and that you would have asked the administration to take, but you almost exclusively publish comments from Dave who is suspended and for a much longer period, and for not following certain rules according to the same administration.

Maybe it’s time to set the record straight and only post what you authored, like everyone else here. That would be logical and in line with your desire to be fair and equitable. What do you think?

Relevant AWE information and appropriate responses are beneficial irrespective of the source. Just as we share information from news outlets and activities of people not even registered or represented on this forum.
I will gladly help Doug as I have DaveS if I have his submissions to which I concur.
I am mindful of the same risks as I post.
By the way, there have been other offenders in my opinion but I must leave final judgements to appropriate authorities.
There is no authority but of God. And every one shall one day account for the excercise of all such privileged authority to God.

The FAQ doesn’t give guidance on what consequence rule breaking would have, so that is somewhat arbitrary, or left to the moderator. Most often I ignore the comments or move them. The goal is to reduce comments like these from Doug, while limiting moderator workload. If anyone has a different approach, you’re welcome to share.

Thanks, PierreB.

I got the link through my Google Notifications subscription on the topic Airborne Wind Energy. I had even shared same on ‘X’ (Twitter) but you had put it in here before I visited to do same.

That said, it’s worth noting that SkySails an old MOU partner with kpower (now JAL) was prominent in the publication.

Twisting the truth until it’s more lie than truth for some ill-conceived propaganda, I’m sure that’s not backfiring and hasn’t been backfiring for years. Someone needs to read a book about how to gain trust, or how not to lose it.

I stand to be corrected. Please be specific or shall I say be more detailed on your accusation. @Windy_Skies
Imho, your anti-DaveS stand beclouds your judgement of facts.

@AweEnthusiast ,
Hello John,

Please can you provide some elements to support this statement? Thanks.

And let’s not forget last week’s “kPower magic celebrity of the Month” Roy Mueller (am I remembering his name right?) with his spinning ribbons? Wasn’t he just named the new CEO of “JAL” or something?

What is this, chain-namedropping? You’ve got a supposed association with Skysails (OK sure we’ll agree to a meaningless memorandum of (non?) understanding (yawn)). Meanwhile they gave up on their main stated goal (pulling ships with sails in the sky), and don’t seem to be pursuing AWE anymore either. Then you’ve got the Jalbert triangles, which were great enough to change the name of kPower over, just not great enough to do anything further (I guess the Jalbert name didn’t help - how could that be???) and now I guess we’re hangng all our hopes on Roy Mueller (thanks for sending me a spinning ribbon Roy!) but I’m not sure if even Roy can save kPower from itself!

Never have I seen anyone brag so much, producing so little results, always trying to leverage off the perceived good names of other people and organizations. You’d imagine he might realize how ridiculous it all looks at this point.

(Guilt by association?)

Thanks @PierreB.
I am not within kpower to have the proof you request. We will need kpower’s CTO to help illuminate if @Windy_Skies will allow…
My point really is that DaveS has more potentially beneficial inputs for this forum than for him to be ‘indefinitely’ excluded as is presently the case.

Your edited version is much better, although it isn’t clear why it’s worth noting:

“Former” would be clearer than “old” though, as a email agreeing to something a decade ago that then wasn’t acted upon and won’t be now really shouldn’t be mentioned even now every chance you get. And we don’t know what “MOU partner” means. Did they agree to give you a guided tour if you happened to be in the area?

Right… I’m sure you have the contact information of the people who do. Why are you posting things you have no proof of?

He takes up too much moderation time and is combative, and was unwilling to change last time there was any interaction. There was also an impetus, which will not be shared by me, for the current suspension.

Once the current suspension finishes he can have another go, or an appeal can be made acknowledging the problematic behavior and a intention to correct it. If his behavior and writing style doesn’t change I predict another suspension.

Given the shown unwillingness to change, currently I’m more of the mind to only lift the suspension after an appeal though.

Some context:

Note the infinite time I spent on this. I am unwilling to continue this or let the other forum users suffer through it.

A quote from a different topic:

Maybe this needs to be said sometimes:

Just like everyone else with the moderator badge on this forum, @Tom, @tallakt, @Rodread, who have mostly abstained themselves from moderating by now, I’d rather do something else, and I do think there is an unfairness in leaving most of the work to one person – but they do do other things.

That just kind of organically grew like that because I am quicker to react to messes, and because I am infinitely patient it sometimes feels like, but that then also gives me the responsibility to deal with the mess that results from that patience. The others seem done with the thing and probably sometimes my patience and the consequences that has.

I treat moderating the forum with the attitude of Wikipedia:Be bold - Wikipedia, and since no one else is currently moderating, I use “I” as a pronoun in motivating my decisions. That might give a false impression of the dynamics, the other people with the badge have an equal say on anything as far as I am concerned, if they decide to say anything, and the other users can give their feedback, and then the best supported position should win.

…and moderator applications are always open.

Also to be said, I appreciate the effort you put into moderation. One reason I dont do it because I am not very good at it. But maybe better to do it badly than not at all

The only thing you need is some good judgement, which almost everyone on here has. Then you can just flag comments and let someone else do something, or do that something yourself as well and trust in your own judgement. You don’t have to make my mistake of endlessly trying to explain yourself or enabling the behavior. Ignoring or silencing repeat offenders, or at best a “look within” if you want, is all you need to do.

Flagging really does help, without them I am flying blind on what everyone else thinks and it just seems like everyone is okay with everything. When anyone sees a comment and thinks this shouldn’t be here or this irritates me in some way as it seems to be in some way at odds with things like the FAQ, you can just flag it and see what comes of it. And don’t stop flagging comments if some of your flags don’t seem to be acted upon.

But don’t feel obligated to do anything. Coming to the forum shouldn’t be a chore and it would be counterproductive if more of a focus on moderating resulted in less of a focus on AWE.

TLB FOWT PDF linked was a team effort, including by top EU TLB scholars, whose references are cited. Many of the examples were in fact new design variants and subscale prototypes within the TLB Consortium Team. Any lack of detail was due to DOE length specifications. Much more detail available.

This looks written by Santos. Please in the future credit anything you post that is not yours. It is important to do that as Santos’ writing behavior was one reason for his suspension on this forum. If you have the same writing behavior, you risk the same consequences. The risk for you is lower though. Please remember that you are responsible for what you post.

Your goal should be to remove suspicion you are sneakily helping with ban evasion. If you are helping with ban evasion, do it openly and in a limited manner. Otherwise you risk my suspicion and irritation, and that of the other forum users, and a possible suspension. Ban evasion is usually grounds for a suspension.

To help you see some of what is wrong with the comment, and why you should not have forwarded it:

I only see the single author. Who contributed to it as well? Remember you can’t claim someone is a member of your team just by citing them. If it were, Newton would be a member of a lot of teams.

A lack of detail was not one of the criticisms. Please refer back to them to see what the criticisms were.

Your efforts are much appreciated @Windy_Skies
I however think it is needful to bear in mind that a forum like this is not exactly an exclusive or strictly academic forum where you are trying to score posts as if the contributors were some paid lecturers obliged to teach every student to understand.
Different personalities, educational backgrounds, skills and writing styles; all need be tolerated just not the abusive.
Usually a good introduction and understanding of individual backgrounds and experiences help for a better appreciation of authors and their contributions.
Where these are lacking, every post will be expected to be a textbook or shall I say an encyclopaedia?

The TLB Team Poseidon only needed a captain to make the submission on her behalf and that was what was done. I am privileged to be part of the team with members from across the continents. International collaboration teams with members acting as local independents are common these days. Should anyone expect you to list your team of moderators here to acknowledge that they are on the board with you? Will the teams’ founding MOU or letters of appointment to the members also be required?
